pick that up. right now it looks like republicans could count on gaining at least 30, perhaps as many h as 35, but they re still just a handful away from the majority. in the senate it s really tomorrow that changes the dynamics. they ll swear in a new senator, cart goodwin will take over the seat left vacant by the death of robert byrd and republicans will have 41 seats in the senate. that means they will need ten seats to pick up the majority, and we say the democrats have 59 seats, that actually includes a pair of independents who vote with democrats. so republicans have 41, and they need ten on the gop side. they re looking at pickups of perhaps 5-8 seats, but they, too, are short. the question is whether or not they will lose enough to lose the majority, and that s still an open question. jenna: so, carl, if you were betting now, which is more likely, a gop majority in the house or senate? reporter: well, if the i were a betting man, i probably wouldn t take my odds from the
jenna: well, it was a potentially game-changing election in just a few months, and both democrats and republicans say the message voters send to washington will be the one they want to hear. but which party really has the advantage? it s a big question. carl cameron is in ow washington bureau with more on this. do you have the answer? reporter: yeah, well, sort of, but not really. the question is not whether the republicans are going to pick up seats in this year s midterms but whether or not they ll capture the majority, and that was pretty much confirmed across the board in the last two weeks of discussion. the state of play matters. right now democrats in the u.s. house of representatives have 255 seats, republicans have 178. that means for them to win the majority they need 40, 218 is the majority number needed to take control, so they re going to need 40 seats in order to
we need to pass a congressional intelligence authorization bill. it s been six years, the senate has passed the bill, i believe the house intelligence committee has approved a bill, and we just need the speaker to bring it up. that s first. we need strong congressional oversight. for almost six years now, we haven t had a bill and we need to get a bill done so congress can issue, exercise its oversight authority. jenna: doesn t a another bill or more congressional oversight just add another layer of bureaucracy to the system that the washington post is pointing out is already bloated and full of big government? we don t have any overlap , we re not in the same position. just haven t been able to exercise oversight effectively. we have a great staff that monitors all the agencies. we need to be able to help them straighten things out, and secondly, we need to do what the article points out
