How to Keep Your Aloe Plant Alive and Well Kelly Allen © Hearst Owned Everything you need to know to care for an aloe plant from how often to water it to where to keep it in your home. Aloe vera makes for an excellent indoor plant. Not only is it easy to maintain, it’s sleek and doesn’t have a bunch of leaves that may fall to the ground. Another plus: The gel inside of its leaves can help relieve pain from sunburns or other skin irritations. If you have an aloe plant or plan on buying one, you need to know how to care for it to ensure it thrives. Here, Jen Stearns, owner of boutique plant store Urban Sprouts, which specializes in curating and maintaining greenery indoors shares tips for keeping your aloe plant alive and well.

How to Care for an Aloe Plant - How to Harvest Aloe

Tips: Start by placing your aloe plant in a pot with good drainage. The pot s diameter should be 1 to 2 inches larger than the root ball. Keep your aloe plant in a spot with bright, indirect light. Aloe can get sunburned if put in too much light suddenly. If your aloe plant does get sunburnt, it will have a white or light brown discoloration against the green leaves. Once burnt, the leaves will stay that color. Aloe is sensitive to drastic fluctuations in temperature. Keep the plant away from drafty doors or vents, especially in the winter. Let the soil dry out between waterings. Use your finger or a wooden skewer to test how wet the soil is before watering.
