© Getty Images White House officials on Thursday shot down the idea of passing a proposed coronavirus relief package piece by piece amid difficulty getting Republican support for the legislation. Multiple officials signaled the administration had no intention of breaking the $1.9 trillion package up after Politico reported in its Playbook newsletter that White House officials were prepared to pass individual portions of the larger proposal if certain pieces could garner 60 votes to pass in the Senate with GOP support. Viewers of the roughly hourlong briefing sat through numerous technical difficulties over the course of the broadcast, as White House COVID-19 response coordinator Jeff Zients At one point, White House chief medical adviser Anthony Fauci ADVERTISEMENT At other times, participants could be heard talking over each other or complaining about audio problems, apparently unaware that their own mics were live. The audio issues continued throughout the broadcast, however, and culminated in an amusing sign-off as Zients was forced to accept a second, hand-held microphone to replace the one in front of him on the table for the final seconds of the broadcast in order to thank the other participants and reporters who called in.

White House goes full-throttle on COVID relief talks

ADVERTISEMENT The $1.9 trillion relief proposal is designed to help American workers, businesses and state and local governments impacted by the virus, which has caused millions of job losses. A large chunk of the proposal is also devoted to supporting nationwide testing, a vaccine distribution plan and safe school reopening efforts. Biden has run into resistance from Republicans as he pushes for the passage of the proposal in a Congress that is narrowly controlled by Democrats. The president has said he’d like to get bipartisan support for the package, but the White House has not ruled out using reconciliation to pass a bill with a slim majority.
