The 100 Best Documentaries of All Time

The 100 Best Documentaries of All Time By Elizabeth Jackson, Stacker News AND Nicole Johnson, Stacker News On 5/5/21 at 8:00 PM EDT Great documentaries often give access and illumination to stories that would otherwise go untold. The subject of a great documentary can be anything from a single individual s life to a broader political event, and the effect of the films can be anything from uplifting to devastating. To celebrate the genre, Stacker created a ranking of the top 100 documentaries of all time by leveraging data on all documentary movies to create a Stacker score that serves as a weighted index split evenly between IMDb and Metacritic scores. To qualify, the film had to be listed as a documentary on IMDb, have a Metascore, and have at least 1,000 IMDb user votes. Ties were broken by Metascore and further ties were broken by votes. Documentary TV series were not included.

4 Years After Leaving NXIVM, Sarah Edmondson Is Still Questioning Everything

 | Updated January 26, 2021 J Benson Pictures / Courtesy of Sarah Edmondson Vancouver actor Sarah Edmondson is glad she opened up about her experience in the NXIVM cult. Sarah Edmondson didn’t get much sleep the night before I talked to her. “My kids got up so fucking early this morning,” she tells me over the phone from her home in Vancouver, between sips of coffee. “ 4:55.” You’d never know she was tired, though. Edmondson is a fast talker, one of those people with a lot of chipper energy, clever, quick to punctuate a story with sharp, funny observations. Anyone who’s seen “The Vow,” the HBO documentary series that details her 12-year experience in the NXIVM cult, is familiar.

How Turkey became a hub for Arab Spring exiles

As a charismatic revolutionary from a scrappy Cairo neighbourhood, Ahmed Hassan was one of the stars of Jehane Noujaim’s 2013 documentary The Square, which followed a group of Egyptian activists as they toppled longtime ruler Hosni Mubarak in 2011 and then fought to keep their faltering revolution alive. The film won three Emmy Awards and was nominated for the Oscars. But Hassan’s life got harder after it was released. His work as a cinematographer and filmmaker dried up as production companies stopped hiring him, perhaps because he was blacklisted. He had to abandon a film project after receiving threats. He could not carry a camera in the street without being harassed. Most of his friends were in prison, some had died.
