Deaths linked to COVID-19 have dropped dramatically in the Danbury area. Here s why.

DANBURY At Danbury Hospital, far fewer people have been dying from COVID-19.
“It’s an intermittent phenomenon here,” said Dr. Jeffrey Nicastro, chief medical officer for Nuvance Health, which includes Danbury, Norwalk and New Milford hospitals. “We still have an occasional death with COVID. There is no doubt.”
The state reported one death of a Danbury resident on Wednesday the first death in the city since April 12. Thirteen towns surrounding Danbury have not reported any deaths since April 12, when the state recorded four for the area.

Since those early days of the crisis, 7,725 people across the state so far have passed away.
There’s been more than a quarter million cases and thousands of hospitalizations.
“Many people died as a result of this disease, but many, many more had it and recovered and that s a great triumph,” said Dr. Nicastro.
Dr. Nicastro said while medical staff have gotten better at treating COVID-19, he credits mask wearing, social distancing and washing hands with helping to get the pandemic under control.
Though it’s not over yet, even with the arrival of vaccines.
