No tolerance for hatred

No tolerance for hatred  As residents, home owners, and community members of San Luis Obispo County, we are upset, but not shocked, by the tragic hate crime perpetrated on the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity on the Cal Poly campus. The hate crimes on the campus are ongoing, a cyclical targeting of one group after another who claim individual and/or intersectional identities of female, Jewish, Muslim, Black, LGBTQ-plus, and non-majority identities. It is common knowledge that a swastika is the symbol used to represent the Nazi party. The wider implications of the sign are terrifying and go far beyond symbolic signaling: Its use is a crime of the most severe degree against these individuals and our collective humanity. Members of the Cal Poly Alpha Epsilon Pi Jewish fraternity examine the damage. Last Shabbat, swastikas and anti-Semitic graffiti were spray-painted on and in front of the Alpha Epsilon Pi Jewish fraternity house at the California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) in San Luis Obispo, according to a message sent by the school. The fraternity later posted on its Instagram account: Last week, on January 27th, we honored the memory of the 6 million Jews who perished and others affected by the Holocaust. Unfortunately, in 2021, anti-Semitism is still the number one cause of hate crimes in the United States. This morning, a hateful group of people committed an antisemitic hate crime on our chapter house. We awoke to multiple swastikas and antisemitic statements spray-painted on and in front of our house. This was targeted at us, as the Jewish fraternity, and we would like to let the world know we do not tolerate or condone this behavior. Our chapter and the entire San Luis Obispo

The GoFundMe skyrocketed, raking in more than $21,000 as of Tuesday afternoon. “We have received a lot of positive attention, and would like to put that energy towards a good cause,” the fraternity wrote. The group said all additional donations will be split between Israel s memorial to Holocaust victims, Yad Vashem, and the Jewish Community Center (JCC) of San Luis Obispo.  According to a campuswide message by university President Jeffrey Armstrong and other officials Saturday evening, the incident was reported to the San Luis Obispo Police Department and an investigation is underway. “Let us be perfectly clear: behavior that promotes any form of hate and seeks to make members of our community feel unsafe and unwelcome especially in their own home – has absolutely no place in our community,” Cal Poly officials said in the statement.
