‘His death should have never happened’: Lawsuit filed in Jefferson County toddler’s 2020 death

A wrongful death lawsuit was filed Thursday in the 2020 death of a 2-year-old Jefferson County boy.
Birmingham attorneys Tommy James of Tommy James Law and Jeremy Knowles of Morris Haynes represent Demetric Jr.’s estate. They filed the lawsuit against the Alabama Department of Human Resources, the director of the Jefferson County Department of Human Resources, Hampton Sr. and yet-to-be identified DHR caseworkers.
Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies at 12:30 a.m. that Wednesday were called to the 1600 block of Sixth Street N.W. in Center Point on a report of a child not breathing. When they arrived on the scene, the parents told lawmen he had been eating and then began to choke. The boy was taken to Children’s of Alabama where doctors discovered he had multiple injuries. Demetric was pronounced dead at 1:46 a.m.
