35 years later, Hands Across America is back virtually
In 1986, millions of people did something that feels a bit crazy in our pandemic world today: they held hands across America to raise funds to combat hunger and homelessness in the United States. Thirty-five years later, the revolutionary event is back in a virtual setting.
The hand-holding event pulled out more than 6 million people across the United States, who clasped hands for 15 minutes in an attempt to form a ginormous human chain.
To hold their place in the chain, most participants pledged at least $10, which was later donated to charities fighting hunger and homelessness. Hands Across America donated about $15 million to organizations.
