Man dies after trailer catches fire, ID not released

A man died early Wednesday after his trailer caught fire in Nevada City, authorities say. Firefighters responded to a report of a blaze around 1:20 a.m. on the 700 block of West Broad Street. Five fire engines, with units from the Grass Valley/Nevada City Fire Department as well as assistance from a couple of neighboring departments, were at the scene and put out the fire within a short amount of time, according to Grass Valley/Nevada Division Chief Sam Goodspeed. The trailer suffered extensive damage, and the fire had briefly spread to a patch of vegetation in the surrounding wildland area, but it was contained before there was any serious threat to other structures, Goodspeed said.

By Liz Kellar | Staff Writer Authorities have released the identity of a man killed in a solo vehicle crash Jan. 8, following an open records request by The Union. Paul Dale McCoy, 70, of Hayward, was the only occupant of the vehicle, which was found around 8 a.m., 100 feet down an eastbound embankment of Interstate 80 near Highway 20, reports stated. The cause of death has not yet been determined, pending toxicology results, said Nevada County Sheriff’s Capt. Jeff Pettitt. “Our guess is it was a medical issue or he fell asleep,” said Frank Newman, a lieutenant with the California Highway Patrol, at the time. “It didn’t appear he tried to get out of the car.”

Nevada County Sheriff candidate Bill Smethers earns endorsements from deputies, Farm Bureau

Another release from Nevada County Farm Bureau announced that organization’s endorsement of Smethers as well. Members of the association have worked with both candidates in varying capacities. While both candidates possess strong qualities and have had great successes, Smethers remains the choice of the membership. While both candidates have campaigned on a platform of change, the association said in the release Smethers will create the most positive change for the office and for the community.
