Petersburg schools has plan in place to respond to Governor's mandate

The Progress-Index We anticipated that something like that was going to be coming forward, in all honesty, Pitre-Martin said, when asked about Northam s announcement on Saturday at Petersburg s vaccination event at Petersburg High School. Pitre-Martin also expressed confidence that PCPS will be able to meet the Governor s demands. Petersburg has not offered in-person learning to students since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020. That confidence is due to plans that offered a hybrid learning model, that would have allowed students to return to the classroom. The plan was presented to the Petersburg School Board in a June meeting, prior to the 2020-21 school year. At the time, however, Pitre-Martin recommended that PCPS open only virtually, and the school board supported her recommendation.

Most Petersburg teachers expected to receive dose of vaccine soon

The Progress-Index PETERSBURG  Petersburg City Public Schools superintendent Dr. Maria Pitre-Martin expects that a majority of teachers in the division will receive the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine within the next two weeks, though vaccination is not mandatory for PCPS teachers or staff, she said. Speaking at the first of three mass vaccination events at Petersburg High School on Saturday, Pitre-Martin said that giving staff the option of being vaccinated because, it is an important, individual medical decision, she said. We do think a large majority of staff will be pursuing the vaccine, Pitre-Martin said Saturday. Just today I have seen many many of our staff come through, so that has been very encouraging.

Then, supplies will be distributed to students and families at the same location on Feb. 27 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Amanda Harris, who is the chair of the committee, says that the drive is meant to fill gaps for Petersburg students and families might be going without.

Hopewell schools will now open for in-person learning in March

NewsSportsEntertainmentLifestyleOpinionUSA TODAYObituariesE-EditionLegals Hopewell School Board rejects superintendent s request to open schools next month, opts for March 1 Superintendent Dr. Melody Hackney says she is heartbroken the School Board rejected her plea to physically bring students back to school Feb. 8. She says parents deserve the choice between in person, online. The Progress-Index HOPEWELL   Hopewell schools will open for optional in-person learning beginning March 1, the Hopewell School Board decided Thursday evening a specially called meeting. The decision will delay Hopewell school s opening by nearly a month. Hopewell previously planned to open schools for in-person learning on February 8. The decision went against the recommendation of Hopewell s superintendent, Dr. Melody Hackney. Hackney recommended that Hopewell schools should open in February as planned, but the board overruled that recommendation, instead opting to  delay.
