Assembly may look at ending Petersburg’s mask mandate in early June

Elected officials in Petersburg hope to consider removing a local mask mandate and ending emergency responsibilities early next month.
That will likely depend on maintaining a low COVID-19 case count following a busy Little Norway Festival week.
On Monday, assembly member Chelsea Tremblay suggested reviewing the face covering mandate at the assembly’s next meeting.
“If we go by the week of June 7
th, that’s three weeks after we’ve had this superstorm of people and events,” Tremblay said referring to the recent festival. “Also frankly we changed our travel mandates so instate travelers didn’t have to test and our neighbor Ketchikan is experiencing an outbreak right now. I guess we’re going to see. We’re going to see what happens. I’m kind of anticipating a few cases possibly. And so I’m not going to lose a lot of sleep over that but I just hope that

COVID show notes for Friday, May 14, 2021 –
Incident commander Karl Hagerman – COVID situation in Petersburg right now, still at low risk, four active cases, all travel related, people who have left Petersburg, returned here and since tested positive. They were symptomatic and were tested at the airport and at Petersburg Medical Center’s respiratory clinic. They have been directed to isolate and he believes the risk to festival-goers is low.
Petersburg still has a face covering mandate in place. He mentioned the Centers for Disease Control’s latest guidance on fully vaccinated people and masking.

The board for Petersburg Medical Center Wednesday sought support for pursuing a new hospital facility in a work session with the Petersburg borough assembly. Some on the assembly continue to push back on the high cost of building a new community hospital.

A question on the remote Frederick Point East subdivision on Mitkof Island near Petersburg is one step closer to going before voters this fall.
The measure would ask voters whether to remove the subdivision from Petersburg’s service area one, paving the way for a lower property tax for the land and cabins on the eastern side of the island. Land owners have asked for a lower tax rate because they don’t receive the same services extended to more populated parts of borough.
