In The Moment: What "Dark Matter" Could Mean For Us, And Why Particle Physics Matters

The remaining $127 million dollars in American Rescue Plan funds are going to be released to South Dakota.  Mary Staddick Smith is the Deputy Secretary of the South Dakota Department of Education, she discusses how the state will use the money. Faith Bottum is a graduate of South Dakota Mines and has been selected as the 2021 Rago Fellow for excellence in journalism. This grants her a 9-month internship with the Wall Street Journal. Physicist Hugh Lippincott is one of a cadre of scientists coaxing the universe to reveal its most essential secrets. We explore dark matter, particle physics, and Neutrino Day at the Sanford Underground Research Lab.

Beneficial Insects Can Keep Pests Out of Farmers Fields

4:54 Instead of eliminating insects from crop acres, Alex Michels is researching farm practices that encourage them. “For every 1700 insect species, there’s only one pest. Insects get a bad rap. And when you see some bad insect out in your field and you spray, that can kill all those other 1700 good insects as well,” says Michels. When Michels refers to good insects, she’s talking about beneficial insects that work to pollinate plants or break down manure or eat weed seeds or aerate the soil or eat insects that can cause harm to crops like corn, soybeans, sunflowers or wheat.
