Architects and filmmakers share their stories

Architects and filmmakers share their stories By AIA Staff Look Up Film Challenge winners announced at Chicago Architecture Biennial The winners of the Look Up Film Challenge were announced in Chicago on Saturday as part of the inaugural Chicago Architecture Biennial, sponsored in part by the AIA. The grand prize winner, My City Listens, filmed in downtown Los Angeles and submitted by Andrew Jeric and Soha Momeni, is about the interplay between personal identity and the city’s textures. But in My City Listens, the city plays two roles: an object to discover and a subject to know. The narrator anthropomorphizes Los Angeles as a young woman’s day unfolds, at times at times blithely, at times determinedly. Here is my closest friend, always comforting, always lending an ear, the film’s narrator says about Los Angeles. She is all grace [and] it is so difficult to leave her.

LUCE et Studio Reimagines Mingei International Museum in San Diego

Copy Jennifer Luce, principal and founder of LUCE et Studio Architects has shared her vision for the Mingei International Museum renovation in San Diego. The design is featured in a video by Jeff Durkin of Breadtruck Films. The Mingei is a nonprofit that collects, conserves and exhibits folk art, craft, and design objects in Balboa Park. During the building’s centennial, a $55 million campaign began to renovate the structure. Founded in 1978, the Mingei is part of the House of Charm, a Mission Revival-style building. Originally designed as a  temporary exhibition space for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition, the building will be renovated to better serve the community and connect to the surrounding park. LUCE et studio approached the transformation as an opportunity to provide a ground floor exhibition hall, a new sunken auditorium, and a new staircase and skylight for the building s bell tower.
