More than half of those surveyed (52%) bought gifts online and had them delivered to their homes.
Field Agent Canada spokesperson Jeff Doucette said the large volume resulted in delays for the post office and couriers with many noting (38%) at least one gift did not arrive in time for Christmas.
A small percentage (10%) bought online and then picked up at the store.
Doucette noted how Canadians also showed their love for local with almost a quarter spending their money at locally-owned stores.
The sale of gift cards was down this year (11% of total spending) with Doucette thinking the uncertainty of some retailers during the pandemic lockdowns and shutdowns may have dampened demand.
