(TNS) The mammoth $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief and stimulus bill enacted last week will deliver to the Cullman area a significant infusion of new money to county and municipal governments. The question is how will it be spent?
States, counties, and municipalities nationwide are set to receive $350 billion from the American Rescue Plan Act, which President Joe Biden signed into law last week. Overall, Alabama is expected to receive $4.043 billion in funding, according to the state Department of Finance, with $2.1 billion going toward a statewide COVID-19 relief fund.

Over the years, thereâs been a lot of on-again, off-again local ferment to change up the structure of Cullman Countyâs three-member commission form of government. This year, decadesâ worth of talk turned to action.
Earlier this year, Gov. Kay Ivey signed into law a bill passed by the Alabama Legislature that will incrementally reshape the county commissionâs three-member composition into a five-member body. Supported by all members of Cullman Countyâs local legislative delegation, the new law will convert the commission into its new form starting with the 2022 election cycle.
