the seat of american democracy, overwhelming police and delaying the certification of the presidential election until 3:42 a.m. lawmakers were forced to flee the house and senate chambers while law enforcement, with guns drawn, tried to protect the entrances. at least nine people died as a result of that day, and more than 140 police officers were injured. but the violent insurrection at the capitol is only part of the story. members of the committee believe the deadly assault is just the most visible evidence of a broader plot to undermine american democracy, one that emanated from the white house. and as the committee members enter the room, we should point out that there are seven democrats and two republicans on this committee. their staff with them has conducted more than 1,000 interviews. they ve gathered tens of thousands of documents. and now they have a difficult job of making this compelling case to the american people tonight about how close we came to losing our d
