Acquitted. According to a statement from the Defense Department, secretary mark esper lost his trust and confidence in spencer over the handling of the case of chief petty officer eddie gallagher. Gallagher had been accused of committing war crimes while deployed back in 2017. He was acquitted of murder but convicted in july of posing with a corpse of an isis prisoner for which he was demoted. President donald trump reversed that demotion and on thursday tweeted that gallagher would keep his trident pen, signifying his status as a member of the elite navy seals. A day later spencer told reporters that he believed the review process over gallaghers status should go forward, but contrary to those public statements, the Defense Department says spencer privately proposed to the white house that he be retired as a navy seal.
