Northern Virginia has not only been the engine of Virginia’s shift to a blue state, it’s also the state’s biggest economic driver. 45 percent of all personal income in Virginia was earned by Northern Virginia residents in 2018. That’s according to Jeannette Chapman, the director of the Stephen S. Fuller Institute for Research on the Washington Region’s Economic Future at George Mason University. This Monday, the Falls Church City Council is scheduled to adopt its Fiscal Year 2022 budget, and while former years saw struggles over trying to hold the line on real estate tax rate increases, the opposite is true this year. It’s not a question of whether, but how much the rate will be cut below its current $1.355 per $100 assessed valuation rate.
City Manager Wyatt Shields initially recommended a one-cent reduction, which given the robust increases in real estate assessments reported in February, will still mean significantly increased dollar sums for most City property owners. Now, he’s going to present an option for a two-cent cut.

Florida State University Panama City held a naming ceremony on April 8, 2021 for the Chapman Family Foundation, honoring their lead gift to establish the FSU PC Promise Scholarship. The Chapman Family Foundation Center for Academic Advising and Student Success was announced by Randy Hanna, dean of FSU Panama City, at a small ceremony with members of the Chapman family and University faculty and staff.
