Suter: If we could see ourselves

In California, during the war between Japan and the United States, there was a catastrophe not related to the war. Equipment and workers surged to the scene and the damage quickly disappeared. A Japanese observer, watching the efficient teamwork, commented, “Japan will never win the war.”
In another situation, a woman remarked, “After seeing how fiercely Americans value their freedoms, I doubt that they will allow anyone to take them away.”
On a more somber note, Nikita Krushchev predicted that Russia would conquer the United States without firing a shot. “We will destroy you from within.”
