Bella Terra Vineyards was founded in 2015 by Jay and Joanna Bell with the idea of creating a space for outdoor weddings and events and supplying those events with homemade wine.
But once the tasting room opened and things got rolling, they realized that the potential was grander than originally thought. By 2019, Jay and Joanna had left their “day” jobs to focus on the winery full time and added several employees, including general manager Heather Gibas and winemaker Bill King. That same year they opened a tasting room and event space, which offered wine, local craft beers and Pennsylvania-made spirits.
The owners of Bella Terra Vineyards are hoping the new signage in front of their tasting room on East Pitt Street will mark a new beginning for the companyâs operations in Bedford.
Jay and Joanna Bell, owners of the Westmoreland County -based winery, purchased the Briar Valley Winery and Vineyard from Tod and Jean Manspeaker this past May. The sale came a few months into the coronavirus pandemic, which the couple at the time hoped was nearing an end.
Nearly nine months later, the state restrictions on restaurants and bars â and tasting rooms â remain in place to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.
