Long Beach officials are asking the community to submit letters of encouragement to the migrant children being housed inside the Long Beach Convention Center after wrapping up a previous drive, in partnership with the Long Beach Convention & Visitors Bureau, that collected 30,000 toys and books.

The city is now asking for anyone wanting to write words of encouragement to the children living in the Convention Center over the next few months to drop them off at participating locations so they can be displayed at the Convention Center and given directly to the children living there.
Letters will be accepted from May 10 through May 22.

Last week, the city of Long Beach welcomed nearly 100 migrant children to the Long Beach Convention Center. The effort is part of an operation to provide temporary housing until the children who were unaccompanied at the U.S.-Mexico border – can be reunited with their families or placed with a sponsor.
Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia says when he got the call from the White House asking if the city would host a temporary shelter, he immediately said yes.
“The history of being a welcoming city is a big part of it,” he said. “We have the right facilities, we know how to work with partners and create an environment that is welcoming and safe, and I think that’s part of what we’ve done.”
Beginning Thursday, full-access library cardholders 18 years and older can schedule requests for devices online or by calling the library directly. Staff assistance is available from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. Reservations must be made at least one day in advance, according to library staff, who said device pickups will begin next Tuesday.
Devices may be loaned for two weeks at a time. Parents or guardians must use their library card to borrow the devices for residents who are under 18. The past year highlighted the importance of access not only to traditional library services, but also to supporting our day-to-day technology needs, Mayor Robert Garcia said. The city encourages all residents to continue to use city resources that are available online at longbeach.gov during furlough days. To help balance the City’s budget during this economic downturn, some services are closed on alternating Fridays. These furloughs affect many operations in all city departments and help prevent significant service reductions to the community. Emergency public response such as police, fire, animal care, public works and utility emergency response remain unaffected by furloughs.
