Hurrah to Lakewood Ranch High’s new state champions!
The Mustangs JROTC team won the State JROTC Orienteering Championship at Jay Starkey Preserve in Pasco County, triumphing over more than 260 runners from 18 schools statewide.
What is orienteering?
According to retired
Lt. Col. Richard Roller, it’s a navigation sport where runners are provided a map with a number of controls they must navigate to check in and finish as fast as possible.
“The simplest way I describe it is cross country with a map,” said the school’s JROTC instructor.
There were six courses – novice, intermediate and advanced – from 3 to 6 kilometers in distance.
