A thief who tried to elude police by riding a motorcycle through a farm field received a reduced sentence Friday due to the “extraordinarily harsh” conditions he endured from jail overcrowding, lockdowns and an ant infestation.
Ontario Court Justice Ronald Marion accepted a joint submission from Crown and defence lawyers that will see Jason Sylvestre receive extra credit for the 91 days he served in pre-sentence custody. With the credit, he must serve 14 more days.

WINDSOR, ONT. Forty-five-year-old Zuhair Gorges was convicted in June of kidnapping, human trafficking, assault with a weapon, assault and uttering threats. He was found not guilty of threatening others, by Justice Christine Malott. The offences date back to May 2018, when Assistant Crown Attorney Jayme Lesperance says Gorges kidnapped a woman and assaulted her until she agreed to enter prostitution, for Gorges’ financial gain. “She was cut with a knife, her wrists and ankles were zip-tied together and she was beaten. This violent attack left the victim terrorized,” according to Lesperance. The woman s identity is protected by a court-ordered publication ban on reporting her name or any evidence that could identify her.

More than two years after being abducted, tied up, held hostage and tortured until agreeing to become a prostitute, a young woman still suffers from daily âtriggersâ and nightmarish flashbacks from âthat day my life changed forever.â
A sentencing hearing was held Monday before Ontario Court Justice Christine Malott for Zuhair Gorges, 45, a married Windsor father of three who was convicted earlier this year of kidnapping, confining and disfiguring a Toronto woman he held for 10 hours in May 2018.
