Sisters School District to put up building bond levy

Sisters School District to put up building bond levy By Charlie Kanzig Tuesday, February 23, 2021 11:24 AM Sisters voters will be asked May 18 to pass a bond for the construction of a new elementary school to replace the current building that is undersized and in need of major renovation. A 2001 bond that was used to build Sisters High School is “retiring,” which means that if the levy is passes the tax rate of 93 cents per $1,000 of assessed property value would simply continue, allowing the creation of a $33.8 million fund for construction of the new school and renovations and upgrades on other district property.

Editor’s letter Editor-in-chief America needs two viable, sane political parties. Parties provide voters with a coherent choice of governing philosophies, and galvanize people to unite behind an agenda and candidates; without opposition, any party inevitably falls prey to corruption and extremism. Liberalism and conservatism are yin and yang, parts of a whole, each contributing insights and values to guide the zigzag path forward. But when parties become enamored with unpopular and foolish ideas, they can die: The Federalists, the Whigs, and the Know Nothings all once flourished and then perished. (See The Last Word, p. 36.) Many Republicans—including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell—now worry that if their party can’t evolve beyond blind fealty to Donald Trump, the GOP will also fade into history. (See Controversy, p. 6.)
