Akron police officer Edward Stewart, affectionately known as “Stew” around the police station, was “like a godfather” to the department.
Officers say they could always turn to him for help, and that he was a role model and mentor to them.
Stewart, 60, died Friday morning after a months-long battle with COVID-19.

His colleagues remember his photographic memory, his willingness to help, his love for the job and his passion for serving the community. Stewart was known to show everyone kindness and respect, even to the people he transported in his paddy wagon.
