The Adapt Waikiki 2050 plan shows much promise in alerting Hawaii to encroaching sea water dangers to hotels as well as to beaches (“Waikiki climate change study underway, city says,” Star-Advertiser, Oct. 30).
Given the dangers posed by hurricanes to all of Hawaii during the active hurricane season from June 1 through Nov. 30, the governor’s office needs a special emergency office to coordinate decisions with local jurisdictions on all islands when it comes to enabling or turning on sirens during an emergency, like the most recent one in Maui.
The island of Maui, especially urbanized areas, should have had sirens going at the top of their volume range when the red-flag alerts were raised several days ago.
In other words, there should be more substance to the recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling since federal assistance to all colleges is now in jeopardy of being withheld.
