Yale University administrators and police officials are trying to reassure first-year students and their parents after the union representing Yale s campus police distributed flyers describing New Haven, the city where the university is located, as crime-ridden and dangerous. The flyers, which included alarming crime statistics, were criticized by Yale Police Chief Anthony Campbell and New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker as misleading and cherry-picked.
The town-gown relationship has long been fraught between Yale, one of the world’s most selective universities, where white students make up the largest demographic, and New Haven, which has long struggled with crime and poverty, and is majority Black and Hispanic.
