Transgender community protests FSU student housing

On April 17, transgender students and supporters held a peaceful protest at Florida State University to combat housing policies that they believe need an update. The protestors were also combating new legislation from the Florida Legislature that they believe are anti-trans. The event was held at the Commons Courtyard at FSU from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. At the protest, students were handed signs and began chanting. Some chants included “One, two, three, four, Florida State has got to do more; five, six, seven, eight, get it done now, we won t wait” and “When I say Safe Housing, you say NOW.”

FSU introduces new LGBTQ+ housing option; Gender Odyssey responds Faith Matson Beginning in the Fall 2021 semester, Florida State University students will have the option to express interest in LGBTQ+ housing on their housing applications. The change mirrors the actions of other universities around the country, including the University of Florida, who have made similar efforts to accommodate LGBTQ+ students. With the new housing option, students will be able to indicate if they would like to live in LGBTQ+ housing, which will welcome both students who identify as members of the LGBTQ+ community and allies.  According to FSU Housing, the housing option has already been offered to almost 200 current FSU housing residents. Incoming freshmen interested in living on campus will also be eligible to opt into LGBTQ+ housing, and the students will be made aware of the option as they complete the housing application process.
