Uruguay s Senate unanimously voted Wednesday to expel Gustavo Penadés as a member after he was handed down 180 days of pre-trial detention for his alleged involvement in 22 sexual crimes, it was announced in Montevideo.
Former Uruguayan military officer Alejandro Ariel Ferreira has been sentenced to 9 years in jail for torture and crimes against humanity at the clandestine detention center known as Los Vagones during the 1973-1985 military regime, it was announced Monday. It was the first conviction by oral and public trial for crimes against humanity through the new criminal code and the first ruling for a crime under international law.
Alejandro Astesiano, the former custodian of President Luis Lacalle Pou, offered the use of El Guardián, the telephone tapping system of the Interior Ministry, which can only be accessed with judicial authorization. The prosecutor in charge of the case, Gabriela Fosatti, investigates in depth the use that Astesiano had of this tool, it was reported.
