Karachi s bird conservationists, wildlife photographers observe significant rise in owl population

When out on an owl prowl in Karachi, it is unlikely that one will be disappointed. The metropolis, even with its characteristic jungle of concrete and unhealthy air, has, seemingly, turned into a magnanimous owls’ nest- so observe its bird conservationists and wildlife photographers.
For one, bird conservationist Zohaib Ahmed has noticed a significant increase in the number of barn owls perched on window ledges, tree branches and other places the nocturnal birds deem fit for rest in cantonment areas near Nagin Chowarangi.
SWD gears up to rescue black bear
Bear baiting has been banned in province since 2015

There are at least three black bears in the province being kept illegally, and the Sindh Wildlife Department (SWD) has been searching for them.
Earlier this week, the SWD managed to locate one of them.
In a video available with The Express Tribune, villagers, traced to a remote in Naushero Feroze district, can be seen cheering on as a chained bear is forced to fend himself against a large white dog bent on attacking him. The cruel game - bear baiting - has been banned in the province since February 2015.
Sindh sees second dolphin death this year

A juvenile blind Indus dolphin, stranded amid plastic trash in one of Sukkur Barrage’s canal, Mirwah, located in Khairpur’s Faiz Ganj taluka, was reported dead on Sunday.
This is the second death of the rare species, colloquially called Bulhan, reported this year in Sindh, according to Sindh Wildlife Department (SWD) Sukkur Deputy Conservator Adnan Khan.
The carcass was recovered by local villagers, who believed that the mammal was still alive at the time.

Four infant monkeys were rescued from one of the city s largest bird markets on Friday following a tip-off and a raid by the Sindh wildlife department. The rescued animals will be released in Nathia Gali next month.
Finding out about the four baby monkeys, caged for sale, on social media South Deputy Commissioner Irshad Ahmed Sodhar alerted the wildlife department. On Sodhar’s indication, the SWD Karachi Raid and Rescue Party conducted a sweep at Empress Market in Saddar, said Deputy Conservator SWD Mumtaz Ali Soomro, speaking to The Express Tribune. “Wildlife trade is banned.”
