The big picture: One of the arguments people make against cryptocurrency is that the difficult-to-trace nature makes it the preferred currency among criminal elements. But engaging in illegal activities on the dark web and using bitcoin for payment doesn’t mean you’re immune from being caught, as two people recently discovered.
As per a Europol alert, an Italian man has been arrested on suspicion of hiring a hitman on the dark web. The assassin was contacted through a site specializing in murder-for-hire services and paid around 10,000 Euros (~$11,870) to kill the suspect’s ex-girlfriend.

A man from Missouri has been sentenced to 12 years in federal prison for attempting to kill someone by purchasing a chemical weapon on the dark web using Bitcoin as payment.

The man named Jason William Siesser tried to purchase the highly lethal chemical weapon twice before being caught.
Siesser had planned to use the chemical weapon to poison a woman who had ended a relationship with him.
According to the Department of Justice (DoJ), there were writings found in Siesser’s home, proving that he was hurting and angry over the breakup.

A Missouri man who tried to buy a highly lethal chemical weapon with the cryptocurrency bitcoin on the dark web told the would-be seller, I plan to use it soon, federal authorities said.
Writings found within the Columbia home of the man, Jason William Siesser, articulated Siesser s heartache, anger and resentment over a breakup, and a desire for the person who caused the heartache to die, the Justice Department said in a press release.
Siesser, 46, was sentenced to 12 years in prison on Tuesday after having pleaded guilty last August to attempting to acquire that weapon and to aggravated identity theft.

Jason William Siesser, 46, of Columbia, was sentenced on Tuesday, prosecutors wrote in a release. On Aug 4, 2020, Siesser pleaded guilty to one count of attempting to acquire a chemical weapon and one count of aggravated identity theft. Prosecutors said he ordered three 10 mL units of the chemical weapon, enough to kill nearly 300 people.
