CANTON Selectmen on Thursday approved using Central Maine Cost Recovery to help the Fire Department collect money from insurance agencies for services provided at fires, accidents and other calls.
Fire Chief Jason Vaughan told the board earlier this month about the agency, which is paid only if it collects money from insurers.
In other business, board Chairman Russell Adams said Friday that the decision on whether the town will help purchase a bulletproof vest for Animal Control Officer Richard Burton won’t be made until the town receives more information from Burton. He also said the cost of the vest would not be considered in this year’s budget, which ends June 30.

CANTON Selectmen agreed Thursday night to have Animal Control Officer Richard Burton submit a request for a bulletproof vest, according to Town Clerk Carol Buzzell.
Burton requested the vest and official photo identification for himself via an email, which Buzzell presented to selectmen at their meeting Thursday.
In it he said he previously asked Livermore for a vest and “an official photo ID” and they asked him to check if Canton would share the cost.
“I have found myself involved in several search and seizure warrants in the last few years,” Burton wrote. “Executing search warrants with other law enforcement agencies is dangerous. A bulletproof vest is not just to stop bullets. All of the ACOs that I know are issued vests with shock plates to stop not just bullets but dangerous dogs. A dog that is intent on killing a person does not bite a person on the leg or hand, they bite your chest and abdomen,” he wrote.

CANTON It won’t be the gala dinner and dance they had planned, but residents will still celebrate the town’s bicentennial with a parade Feb. 5, exactly 200 years after its incorporation.
Selectmen authorized the Bicentennial Committee’s “plan C” on Thursday.
Committee members Phyllis Ouellette, Anne Chamberlin and Loretta Blancato spoke to selectmen Thursday via Zoom to request the original dinner-dance be postponed and a parade held Friday, Feb. 5.
“We went from plan A to plan B and now we’re on plan C,” Ouellette said, because of the coronavirus pandemic that struck the country last year.
“We’re postponing (the gala) to May 1, which we’re hoping, fingers crossed, that’ll work,” she said.
