DV offender acts controlling towards his partner

Premium Content Subscriber only A domestic violence offender was handed a prison sentence after displaying controlling behaviour towards his partner. The defendant, who cannot be named due to legal reasons, pleaded guilty in Rockhampton Magistrates Court on April 27 to one count of contravention of a domestic violence order. Police prosecutor sergeant Kellie Cullen said the defendant and victim were at their home in Rockhampton at 10.30am on April 25 when the defendant told the victim to delete a Facebook post she had made asking if anyone would like to go to the beach with her. Sergeant Cullen said the victim refused because she wanted she wanted to get out of the house and have a good day, however, the defendant told her she had just made the post for attention and did not have respect for him if she didn’t delete it.

Harley ride leads to two-year disqualification

Premium Content Subscriber only An 18-year-old man who rode a motorcycle only eight days after having his licence disqualified for four months, was back in Rockhampton Magistrates Court on Wednesday. David Abell, who pleaded guilty on May 26 to disqualified driving, was pulled over on April 23 riding an orange Harley Davidson with a pillion passenger. Magistrate Jason Schubert demanded to know why he should not sentence Abell to a jail term for such “absolute contempt” of the court. “You thumbed your nose at authorities,” he said. “You were at risk of spending 18 months in prison yet you still drove.” Abell, who is unemployed, said he was “not really sure” why he committed the offence.

Drug-driver blames migraine for court no show

Premium Content Subscriber only A man caught drug-driving at Parkhurst said he failed to appear in court for the offence because he had a migraine and no driver’s licence. Clinton Brian William Taylor, 32, pleaded guilty in Yeppoon Magistrates Court on April 29 to drug-driving and failing to appear. The court heard Taylor tested positive to cannabis after police stopped him driving on Wade St, Parkhurst, on December 15 last year. Magistrate Jason Schubert said Taylor’s history “doesn’t look very good” including previous similar offending in 2020 and 2014. Taylor was fined $650 and disqualified from driving for one month. Man accused of ramming into stationary car and burglary

Premium Content Subscriber only A man accused of ramming another vehicle which was stuck behind another vehicle, and burglary, was granted bail last month. Vincent Joseph Smith, 27, made a bail application in Rockhampton Magistrates Court on April 19. Police prosecutor Clancy Fox alleged Smith made some admissions of his offending to police over the phone. He claimed police felt Smith was at risk of committing more offences if released on bail. Mr Fox said it would be alleged that after the initial incident at 1.30am, police were not able to locate the defendant and a few hours later, received information he was heading back to the victim’s address which caused police concern.
