The City of Brandon’s highest-paid employee in 2020 didn’t actually do any work.
Despite retiring in February 2020 after several months on paid leave, former city manager Rod Sage made the most money of any municipal employee last year, according to a compensation disclosure report released by the city earlier this week.
Under the provincial Public Sector Compensation Disclosure Act, municipalities must disclose how much municipal councillors were paid as well as the salaries of any city employee making $75,000 or more. The threshold was $50,000 until 2019.
Sage raked in $213,519.41 in regular earnings and other compensation in 2020, which is more than $20,000 greater than the No. 2 highest-paid employee, Brandon Police Service Chief Wayne Balcaen. The chief made $193,128.13 in total compensation in 2020.

UNDETERRED by the party’s less-than-spectacular result at October’s territory election, in which it failed to get a single candidate elected, the Belco Party is heading east and south with new branches.
Intent on building on its slim electoral support across the community, it will form branches in the Gungahlin-based electorate of Yerrabi and the Tuggeranong-based seat of Brindabella, adding to its already established branch in the Belconnen-based electorate of Ginninderra.
Former Canberra Liberal leader Bill Stefaniak has confirmed he won’t be re-contesting as a Belco Party candidate for the next ACT election, but will remain as convenor of the expanded Belco Party (ACT).
