SAN DIEGO
The Kim Center for Social Balance, a nonprofit focused on workplace gender equity, recently launched a project to survey business owners about the pandemic’s impact on their livelihood.
The survey will gauge how COVID-19 shutdowns have affected small businesses, especially those owned by women, minorities and LGBTQ people. The idea is to offer local governments recommendations that will help guide recovery.
It also will assess what services were available or not available to small businesses.
The center is collecting information from San Diego County businesses interested in participating, and it will likely begin surveying the businesses in early May.

Over the past year, no business has been able to survive the pandemic without help from their neighbors. Whether it was quickly transitioning to virtual events or getting information on how to apply for federal PPP loans, San Diego County businesses of all sizes leaned into their local chambers of commerce.
The San Diego Business Journal connected with chamber leaders from across the county to hear about how they’ve been serving their members during the pandemic and the vital role their organizations have always played in the business community.
More than Networking
One of the key services that local chambers of commerce provide is the opportunity to network with fellow local businesses. But, Bret Schanzenbach, president and CEO of the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce said the purpose of networking goes beyond social gatherings.

CV’s Steve Padilla Continues Habit of Running Up Debts

Former Chula Vista Mayor Steve Padilla, running for a seat on the Chula Vista City Council, is accused of running his current campaign with over $16,000 in unpaid bills, even as he continues to carry over $35,000 in debt from his past campaigns.
As of his official election report of September 24, Padilla’s current campaign showed a total debt of $16,578.93 in unpaid bills.
A citizen’s complaint prepared this week alleges Padilla has violated Chula Vista’s elections laws by not paying his campaign bills. Specifically, the Chula Vista City Municipal Code states that “A loan or extension of credit shall be considered a contribution from the maker of the loan or extender of credit and shall
