Former Elk Grove School Trustee Bobbie Singh-Allen on Dec. 9 was sworn in as Elk Groveâs first directly elected woman mayor. She also made history as the nationâs first directly elected Sikh woman mayor.
Singh-Allenâs victory in this Novemberâs election came against the incumbent and now-former Mayor Steve Ly, who served for four years as the cityâs mayor and was the nationâs first Hmong mayor.
A video of Singh-Allenâs swearing-in ceremony was played for viewers of the teleconferenced council meeting. She was sworn in by U.S. Rep. Ami Bera, D-Elk Grove, who was deputized by City Clerk Jason Lindgren with the authority to administer the oath of office.
The Elk Grove City Council on Dec. 9 agreed to open all five seats of the cityâs Planning Commission to any resident who desires to apply. The current planning commissioners were invited to reapply for their seats.
Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen, in her first regular council meeting as Elk Groveâs new mayor, introduced this proposal.
After the city receives applications, she will propose appointments to the planning commission for council approval on Feb. 10.
In introducing her proposal, Singh-Allen recognized the Planning Commission as a commission that makes important land-use policy decisions that âhelp shape and guide our city.â
With no limits on the length of time a planning commissioner can serve, Singh-Allen said that allowing others to apply for those seats presents âa good opportunity to let others serve.â
