The Observer Services group within Fisheries New Zealand has taken overall honours at this year’s New Zealand Workplace Health and Safety Awards.
The awards were presented at a gala dinner at the Cordis in Auckland last night.
The annual awards, which began in 2005, are organised by Safeguard magazine and proudly supported by WorkSafe New Zealand and ACC. They are judged by a panel of five.
Rubbish left at Thirlmere by campers
There was fury across the county when it was revealed that a group of campers had left a trail of trash – including five tents, blow-up mattresses and human waste – when they left their camping spot at Thirlmere.
Volunteers and rangers collected 13 bags of rubbish from the site and condemnation of the group’s actions was widespread.
Jason Johnstone, an army veteran, has been wild camping for several years.
Jason, of Denton Holme in Carlisle, said he was appalled at the mess and the destruction to the habitat – but these people were not wild campers.

A former smelter worker has spent $100,000 of his own money developing a monitoring device to prevent others from getting the little known disabling syndrome he has been diagnosed with. Jason Johnstone had worked with power tools for most of his adult life when his fingers started going numb and pale. He ignored the problem despite dropping dishes and other items as he struggled to hold onto them.
