In the book of Leviticus, we are taught that we cannot stand idly by while lives are at stake. This teaching, which is at the foundation of Jewish traditions of social justice, is perhaps more relevant than ever. Amid the pandemic, we are seeing examples of how our actions, such as wearing a mask and social distancing, impact the lives of others. We also saw that we can do more to care for each other than we might have believed. We saw overwhelming numbers of people change their lifestyles overnight to protect themselves and their neighbors, and we heard countless stories of courage from frontline workers and health care professionals who responded to people in need.
