Gov. Greg Abbott sets Feb. 23 special election runoff date for race to succeed Drew Springer in Texas House

Gov. Greg Abbott has picked Feb. 23 as the date of the special election runoff to replace former state Rep. Drew Springer, R-Muenster, who is now in the Texas Senate.
Early voting for the House District 68 runoff will begin Feb. 16.
The runoff candidates are David Spiller, a Jacksboro attorney and school board trustee, and Craig Carter, a former candidate for overlapping state Senate District 30. Spiller finished first in the five-way special election last month, getting 44% of the vote. Carter was the runner-up with 18%.
A candidate running for Texas House District 68 suffered a personal tragedy over the weekend.
It was first announced on Dec. 28th, 2020, that Governor Greg Abbott had called for a special election to fill the seat for Texas House District 68, which was left vacant by Drew Springer, who now represents District 30 as a Texas Senator.
Four Republicans and one Democrat opted to run in the special election. On the Republican side, there was John Berry, a financial planner; Jason Brinkley, a Cooke County judge; David Spiller, an attorney and school board trustee; and Craig Carter, a former candidate for Texas Senate District 30.

The results are in for the Texas House District 68 seat as David Spiller and Craig Carter are headed for a run off.
Spiller received over 43 percent of the vote, while businessman Craig Carter, received 18 percent. This election consisted of five candidates four Republicans and one democratic candidate. The race is now down to two Republican candidates, both looking to make their mark on Austin. Spiller has the endorsement from former United States Secretary of Energy and Texas Governor, Ricky Perry. “It’s official! Our campaign has made the runoff.
