the homes, we are thankful for the rescue teams, but our hearts ache alongside you. we are here to memorialize 29 americans. carl accor, jason atkins, christopher bell, gregory steven brock. kenneth chapman, robert clark. charles timothy davis, cory davis, michael lee elseworth, william. edward dean jones, richard k. lane, william roosevelt lynch, nicholas darrell mccroskey, joe markham,
virginia. and we deeply cherish that. those of us who live here. and we honor that profession. and people say, well, why do they go into those coal mines? they go into those coal mines to provide for their families, and in the process, they keep the lights on in america. [ applause ] but for the families, that means waiting each day, every day, for the sound of your loved one s footsteps on the front porch. it means waiting anxiously to hear that they have returned safely. every day. and the 29 families who one day never heard those footsteps knew what that terrible silence meant. it is almost too much to bear. so we ask why. why does this happen yet again? as the governor said, we will find out. we will learn exactly what happened. we will get answers. and we will pass legislation to meet the requirements of those answers. and we will do it for you, the miners, of west virginia and america. and right now, look at it. you re good to go. leaders from nearly 50 countries are meeting at the convention center. and authorities, they are taking extraordinary steps to protect them. and loaded dump trucks and the barricades. they block the access to some of dc s busiest streets. and some residence, they complain that it is just too much. it s ridiculous. it s like marshall law here. reporter: some neighbors have to present identification just to get him to their own apartments. well now, i don t have a problem with it. i just hope that they will still be around. going to the summertime when they started shooting up around here. hi guys. i m sorry we re back. new york avenue. and this issue here, they were very worried about security at the convention center. and the convention center, it is just right back there. and the reality is that the entire summit is taken place in the building that s back, you know, behind that. the second building. there s this big buf
the upper big branch mine was not a union mine. she said these men they know the dangers when they go in to the coal mines but there s jobs pay well and these guys have grown up around mining. it s a way of life here on this river has been a way of life for as long as i can remember. i ll be 55 years old the 15th. ever since i can remember, that s the way it s been here on this river. funeral today for another one of the seven men whose bodies were pulled out of the mine on monday. the other 22 bodies are in the process ever being recovered. 25-year-old jason atkins was laid to rest in fosterville, west virginia. also down the road from the upper big branch mine in whitesville, west virginia, people there started a makeshift memorial to the miners who died and to those whose bos he s are still in the mine.
tonight, a nation in mourning. as investigators search for answers. also tonight we did not receive the miracle we prayed for. hope turns to heartache at west virginia mining town. crews discover the bodies of four missing workers, ending a desperate nearly week-long search for survivors. and deadliest u.s. mining disaster in decades. lot of times you don t think about it. we re part of one big family pretty much. first to the tragic plane crash, polish president lech kaczynski and his wife both dead as well as many of the country s top military and civilian leaders. officials have recovered the president s body and the plane s black box. and as you can see, much of that plane destroyed in the crash. no one on board survived, in all 97 people dead according to officials. it s a staggering blow to the polish government. the other victims, include poland s army chief of staff, the national bank president, deputy foreign minister, army chaplain, head of the national se
