damaging winds with the thunderstorms today, but also isolated tornadoes will be a possibility. there s an enormous amount of wind energy just aloft, so anywhere from about 3,000 to 15,000 feet, up over our heads. some near 100-mile-an-hour winds. so very, very active weather day coming. the warmer it is here, too, the more it s going to stir the pot, right? correct. thank you, chuck. major storms are to blame for the deaths of at least nine people in the midwest and south, and it appears to be heading our way. nbc s kurt gregory has more on the devastation that those storms left behind. we ve got two, three, oh! reporter: the deadly storm system spawned tornadoes across parts of the midwest and south. no tornadoes reported in western arkansas, but that state was hit the hardest. seven people were killed in arkansas, including a mother and her young son, who died when a tree fell on their house. it s just a tragedy. i feel for the family, with all my heart. oh

severe weather alert. good evening, everyone. thanks for joining us tonight. i m shawn yancy. i m brian bolter. a violent storm system which has already left two people deadheaded our way tonight. the end result could be strong storms, damaging winds and even flooding in some areas. gwen tolbart is tracking it all for us in the weather center. we have to brace ourselves for the chance of severe storms moving through the next 24 hours. you can see the system plowing its way through the middle section of the country on radar. a lot of strong storms already, gusty winds and many severe watches and warnings currently. going to our weather maps, we are currently seeing a few clouds, not a whole lot happening right now for us, but we still have a flash flood watch in effect for areas to the west of the d.c. metro area saturday morning through saturday afternoon. we ll end up seeing some pretty gusty winds with this as well and the ground is already fairly saturated. so we could
