Hon Chernoh Bah addresses ECOWAS Parliament : Sierra Leone Concord Times

Chernoh Maju Bah has in his report to the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) Parliament stated that sexual assault on children in Sierra Leone has been on the increase. Hon. Bah made the above statement at the ongoing first Ordinary Session of the fifth Legislature of the ECOWAS Parliament held in Abuja, Nigeria. “Sexual assault on children has been on the increase. In many cases of sexual assault on children, parents accept payments instead of taking the perpetrators to court due to the difficulties involved in dealing with the justice system, fear of public shame and economic hardship,” he said.

I B Kargbo kicks against local council policy, urges President Bio to protect democracy : Sierra Leone Concord Times

April 16, 2021 Hon. I. B. Karbgo Deputy Leader of the main opposition All Peoples Congress (APC) party in Parliament has stated that the APC party will categorically not accept the proposed local council policy, which provides for local council elections to be conducted on a non-partisan basis, thus urging President Julius Maada Bio to protect the democracy of the country in the best way he could. Speaking in a press conference held at his office at Wellington Street in Freetown, Hon. Ibrahim Ben Kargbo said the move is totally against the spirit of democracy “One thing I am saying is that, I am pleading for President Bio to note that the democracy of the country should be protected and should be done to the extent that, it should not interfere with already legislations that have been working,” he urged.

Scene at the Bintumani Conference Centre where Parliament was seated The sittings of Parliament  was yesterday disrupted by the opposition All People’s Congress (APC) on the grounds that the leadership of their party and other opposition leaders were not consulted  on the hosting of the emergency parliamentary sittings summoned by President Julius Maada Bio. According to the Order Paper, the Attorney General and Minister of Justice was supposed to have tabled the Mid -Term Census Order 2021 and Census Act, 2002 (Statutory Instrument  No. 4 of 2021), the Cyber Crime bill 2020, among other documents. Opposition Members of Parliament chanted slogans that, “This is a House of procedures and it must be followed. No sitting and we don’t need any census. The Speaker is bound to follow the rules.”

March 29, 2021 ECOWAS Speaker of Parliament, Mohamed Sidi Tunis Lawmakers in the ECOWAS Parliament have on Thursday, 25 March, 2012, debated and adopted several recommendations aiming at improving the collection of contributions and arrears from member states. The three-day confab hosted at Bintumani Hotel, Freetown, was aimed at involving all ECOWAS parliamentarians in monitoring the application of the Protocol with the view to guaranteeing adequate recovery of the product, which is needed for financing activities of the bloc. The protocol is intended to guide the collection and generation of the much needed revenue that would enable ECOWAS to sufficiently finance its institutions and projects in the sub-region.
