Japan has granted refugee status to 98 people who fled Afghanistan since the Taliban returned to power last August, government sources said on Aug. 23, in a rare move for a country with a poor record on giving asylum.
Japan s ambassador to Afghanistan has held talks with senior Taliban officials in the capital Kabul for two days, a deputy spokesman of the Taliban s interim government says.
Japan has helped evacuate more than 300 Afghans since the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan in mid-August, with about 140 currently waiting to be flown in from Qatar, Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi says.
The Foreign Ministry says that 53 Afghan evacuees have arrived in Japan, the first group to depart the Taliban-ruled country for Japan by air, with help from Qatar, rather than by land which is deemed more dangerous.
