founder julian assange has in their view no credit. president-elect has tweeted about assange, seeming to side with him, though trying to walk that back a bit in new tweets this morning. the report coming out will include some sort of motivation, at least the report given to president obama and pl president-elect trump. as you heard, james clapper did not want to get ahead of report. hans, what stands out? when we heard from jack reed right at the beginning essentially saying or suggesting that vladimir putin didn t want to hide the appearance, that there were some fingerprints left on the cyber hacking. the ability on the dni to answer these questions comes down to how far they re willing to go to push the envelope on
political correspondent kasie hunt. i know had you a chance to catch up with some members of congress as they were walking io the hearin hearings. what did you hear and what are you expecting as they come out of this? hallie, i think what there listening for here are pieces of evidence as they build a case around the influence that the russian government had over the u.s. election. they re looking and paying very close attention to how donald trump respond to what we hear today. we know that the president has received a briefing on what s in this report that is continually referenced in this hearing that s taking place in this room right behind me. we know that officials have repeatedly tried to say, hey, we re going to wait to answer more questions about this report until it actually comes out. the president-elect is set to be briefed on it tomorrow morning, but they have offered some clues. they have said, for example, that the report will include a
your job a little harder, doesn t it, in all candor, admiral? the way i would phrase it is i think clearly an integrated approach is a key component of our ability to move ahead here. i would say that in the government, in the private sector, there s no particular one slice where that s not applicable. thank you, senator reed. thank you very much, mr. chairman. general clapper you responded to the chairman that in october you and the director of homeland security concluded that the russian government intervened in the election and admiral rogers also seconded that view. that is also today the view for the record, of the fbi and the central intelligence agency. in fact, all of the intelligence community, is that correct? yes. the forthcoming report is done essentially by those three agencies, cia, fbi and nsa. and the same conclusion with the respect to the involvement
invaded that has the american people, we as policy makers concerned, but the average american concerned that there is no privacy anymore. general, do you think in the report next week that you all will ascribe a motivation to putin for the election attempt? yes, we will ascribe a motivation. i d rather not, again, preempt the report. understood. well, then will you discuss after the report what is sufficient in the future to impose enough cost to make them stop this kind of activity?
sources and methods. will they reveal what they know and how they know it. clapper has indicated he wants to go very far on that. just taking a step back, the main headlines are we re going to get intent but not effect of the russian hacking. it will be clear they ll give us an indication on what russia s intent was, what that to tip the scales for hillary clinton in the presidential election, but the gauge of measuring whether or not it affected voters decisions, it looks like the report will not touch on that. as clapper is saying, that is a policy decision. and, hans, how unusual is it to hear james clapper talk about pushing the envelope. can you even speculate is this a response to some of the skepticism by president-elect trump? i think there s an agreement in the intelligence committee that they want to have the public come along with this. that was within of tone of the
