e-Booklet to fast track climate change resilience in agriculture

Ilse Trautmann, Hugh Campbell,Minister Meyer, Bongiswa Matoti and Jannie Strydom AGRICULTURE NEWS - Yesterday, the Western Cape Minister of Agriculture, Dr Ivan Meyer, launched the Western Cape Department of Agriculture’s (WCDoA’s) e-booklets on climate change entitled “The Mercury Rises”. Based on the popular award-winning radio series “Die Kwik Styg , the e-booklets are available in the three official languages of the Western Cape – English, Afrikaans and IsiXhosa. Speaking at the launch Minister Meyer highlighted that climate change is one of his ministerial priorities. Meyer: “Addressing the impact of climate change is one of my Ministerial priorities. The publication of the e-booklets, The Mercury Rises , provides another platform to advance a climate-resilient future for the sector.”

The projections are attributed to good rainfall in the Western Cape last winter following years of drought. The industry employs 50,000 permanent workers. This year, 4% more apples are expected, while the pear harvest is likely to rise by 2%. Agri Western Cape s Jannie Strydom said the sector was a major economic driver providing tens of thousands of jobs.

The Western Cape s deciduous fruit sector is among the many industries affected by the pandemic. Exports suffered because of port closures. This was especially concerning since 90% of its turnover was generated by exports and fresh produce sales. However, a bumper harvest is expected due to last year s good rainfall. Agri Western Cape s Jannie Strydom said that they were projecting a 4% increase for apples and a 2% increase for pears.
