There are some people who are attracted to sort of neat tiny little problems theyd like to solve, and other types of people are attracted to chronic problems that are as old and deep as politics itself, and curbing corruption is one of those cal helpings. What i want to say about the members of the panel two whom i know very intel one i had the pleasure of meeting just now. Theyre people who managed to talk about this topic which can be quite distressing in an uplifting way, and sometimes can make you almost feel optimistic about corruption if thats possible. The dean of the nations lawmakers have seen fit to convene us here today because of the extraordinary exuberance they have this matter of detroit , for its fiscal integrity, conclaves fiscal future, its economic background and the way in which the bankruptcy filing reflects upon and reinforces some very powerful and in some cases dangerous currents that need to be articulated and addressed. Compensation. When we lost on the floor of the house, i was sure it would be turned around. Two factors. First of all, bill knows this, when a measure is coming up, the people who are for it tend to take for granted that it will happen, and the people who are against it scream and yell. You hear disproportionally from the antis. We heard from all the people who thought it was terrible. After the vote, people started hearing from other people who thought that not doing it was terrible. And of course and i would say this is not purely hindsight here. Hank paulson will verify this. We talked that night, and hank, who had done a great job, was in despair. The day the vote was going on, there was a gathering in the well of the house of the bipartisan leadership ready to go into the usual drill of trying to change members vote. I will take credit for going to steny hoyer and others if they do not do this, this is too serious, dont win this by these kind of tactics. We will pay a big price. I
