She was experiencing wild mood swings, had permanent dark circles under her eyes and yawned constantly. “I remember going to the movies once with a friend and I missed the first five or 10 minutes because I had fallen asleep. She had to nudge me awake.”

At her heaviest, Janine Langdon-Lee weighed over 160kg. Apart from the sleep apnoea, she had trouble walking upstairs or sitting on the ground. And because she was so tired all the time, her diet – already poor – became worse, as she reached for carbohydrate-dense foods and, too exhausted to cook, relied more and more on takeaways.
