When we received a phone call saying that our son had broken his finger at Hapkido, we tensed up. My wife’s usually calm countenance was replaced immediately by a worried look of anguish. Our children had suffered all sorts of bumps and scrapes but this was the first time we had encountered a broken bone. Luckily, Edward was fine. He was sat on a chair with his instructor waiting for us when we arrived. But it was what happened next that made me reconsider the ppali ppali (quick quick) culture that underpins much of modern Korea.
I ve been listening to music for 40 years. Once you get that long in the tooth, you start realizing that you ve heard most of the ways people can get from A to B over a chord progression. The next big thing dominating the headlines immediately reminds you of that group that was kind of popular 20 twenty years ago. The big summer hit leans heavily on a melody from an 80s rock number.

In late 2009 I was in the back of a Seoul taxi making my way home from an all-night party, hiding behind my sunglasses and trying to hold my head in a way that didn t make my brain rattle painfully inside. As we passed Euljiro 3-ga and headed up toward the Namsan tunnel, a song came on the radio.
It was Jang Gi-ha and the Faces Living the Carefree Life (byul-e ops-e sanda). At that moment it spoke to me with a great clarity and authenticity. I was awake, alive and here living in Seoul: carefree, indeed.
