Janey Grocott’s house in Mein Street was built for Henry Wright.
A descendant of Henry Charles Clarke Wright, the first owner of this Newtown, Wellington villa, which has just come onto the market, says research shows “for all his historical pomposity, he really was quite the scoundrel”. As
Stuff reported two days ago, Wright is perhaps best known for his Notice to Epicene Women, which he stuck to the front door of the house telling electioneering women to “go home, look after their children, cook their husbands dinners, empty the slops, and generally attend to the domestic affairs for which nature intended them”.
