Scientists Think We Can Delay The Aging Process, But How Far Can We Actually Go?

EVA HAMRUD, METAFACT 3 APRIL 2021 As we get older, many changes happen to our body, we become frail, our hair turns white, and our skin wrinkles. We also become more susceptible to disease and may lose our cognitive abilities.   Aging is generally considered an inevitable part of life, but can it be delayed, prolonging our youthful years? We asked 8 experts the question,  Can aging be delayed?  Interestingly, there was a 75 percent likely consensus. Here is what we found out. What is aging? All living things are made of cells. Scientists often grow cells in the lab to study them. In 1961, researcher Leonard Hayflick noticed that, on average, a human cell can only divide 50 times before it goes into a hibernation-like state called senescence . It is thought that an accumulation of senescent cells in tissues of the body could damage other cells and play a crucial role in aging.

Today s letters: Tighten up on social gatherings during COVID

Try refreshing your browser, or Today s letters: Focus should be on social gatherings during COVID, not shutting businesses Back to video Medical Officer of Health Dr. Vera Etches has warned that Ottawa is on the brink of moving from the “orange” to the “red” zone, as key COVID-19 indicators are heading in the wrong direction. Unmonitored gatherings are responsible for much of the community spread of COVID-19, and people tend to relax their behaviours if they are permitted to do so under the rules in place.

The previous record for the fastest vaccine development, for mumps, was four years. But on Dec. 8 — 11 months after research began — a 90-year-old British grandmother became the first person in the world to receive Pfizer s new COVID vaccine outside of a clinical study. Like Moderna s new shot, which was approved in the U.S. last week, the two-dose vaccine is about 95 percent effective and uses an entirely new type of technology. In traditional vaccines, a patient is injected with dead viral material, which triggers the body to produce antibodies. Pfizer s and Moderna s shot use a synthetic version of coronavirus genetic material that leads human cells to produce copies of the virus outer spike prot
